Hello TRR Readers,
Its the moment you all been waiting for. After 365 days, countless visits to the DC Metro area’s finest movie theatres, and viewing countless films without breaking a sweat; it’s time to declare the THE ROGERS REVUE TOP FILMS OF 2009!
2009 has been an amazing journey for me both in real life and being a film critic. Last year, I have seen some of the amazing performances brought before me on the big screen. From the tearjerkers to the flights of fantasy, I have witnessed so many adventures to truly appreciate the cinematic art form. I am surprised that after seeing over one hundred films, my mind has not turned to mush or that I quote movies on a daily basis by now. This year’s top film list is my very first as a online critic. I have to admit that I was surprised at my selections because it was quite a challenge to choose the best of the best. And now, ladies and gentleman….
The Rogers Revue’s Personal Log – Stardate: November 17, 2009
It was only a mere six months ago that we witnessed a rebirth of a timeless classic. For some of us, it was a journey into a familiar world of ultimate science fiction. For others, it was their first taste of “Warp Speed”, “Scotty, Beam me up”, and “Kirk Out”. Yes, we are talking about one of the first summer blockbusters of 2009, STAR TREK! J.J. Abrams had taken a four decade worldwide phenomenon and made it more action-packed, hip, and exciting for today’s audiences. In return, the new Trek brought in over $257 million dollars, making it the eighth-highest-grossing film of 2009 and rebooting the fledging franchise.

Star Trek will be getting an additional two-week run in almost 100 IMAX theaters. Due to theaters committing early to Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Star Trek’s first IMAX run was only two-weeks. Star Trek was released on May 8th, 2009 and has made $256.7 million domestic, along with $126.3 million internationally for a total take of $383.1 million. The film’s budget was $150 million.

The New Crew of the Starship Enterprise
When I heard that Star Trek was going to be on the big screen again, I was excited at first. Unfortunately, when I heard that J.J. Abrams was going to direct it, I was completely stunned. Abrams has given us such wonderful television shows such as “Lost”, “Alias”, and “Fringe”. When it came to his directorial debut with another television series turned movie series, “Mission: Impossible III”, the third movie had lost its luster. So, you can say that I was less than enthusiatic about Abrams making the same mistake with a much more larger fan base such as Star Trek. That was strike one in my book.
