When you put a “fresh” spin on a fairy tale, it usually winds up being a little stale.
But Mirror Mirror is quite the whimsical surprise, humoring the children and amazing all eyes.

It’s nice to see an action film that doesn’t complicate things just for the sake of looking smart. As much as I enjoyed most of the spy films from 2011, we saw almost every variation and mind-boggling complexity that the genre had to offer. In Haywire, which was initially slated for release early last year, we are treated to 90 minutes of undiluted action that stays within the boundaries of physics (and our attention spans) and out of the confusing details.

It’s good to have Eddie Murphy back in the realm of comedy, and a relief to know that characters like Reggie Hammond and Billy Ray Valentine still have a place amongst the Norbits and Pluto Nashes that have weighed down his bag of personas over the last decade. Perhaps Murphy’s return as the street smart, fast talking hoodlum Slide in Tower Heist is a shout out to himself, revisiting those characters of his comedic heyday (if slightly diluted for its PG-13 rating) without diminishing the rest of the cast.

Who was William Shakespeare? Is he the true writer of every play and sonnet that bears his name? This mystery has tantalized the curiosities and imaginations of literary scholars for decades and now Anonymous (currently in theaters) offers a detailed and convincing version of what may have really transpired before anyone cared about Ophelia, Orlando or Othello.

Actor Luke Evans(front) and director James McTeigue at Westminster Hall
On Friday, October 7th, at Westminster Hall in Baltimore, a commemorative wreath laying ceremony took place at the grave site of Edgar Allan Poe, honoring the enigmatic author on the 162nd anniversary of his death. Participating in the event were James McTeigue and actor Luke Evans, director and star respectively of the upcoming period thriller The Raven, a fictionalized account of Poe’s final days in 1849 Baltimore. The film incorporates the life of the author, played by John Cusack, into a story about a serial killer whose murderous spree is inspired by Poe’s own writing. Mr. McTeigue and Mr. Evans met with us in the catacombs of the historic gothic church to discuss the legendary poet of the macabre and satisfy our morbid curiosity about the production of The Raven, which opens nationwide on April 27th, 2012.
