MOVIE REVUE: Don’t Stop Believin’ in the Rock of Ages

June 15, 2012

Adam Shankman is back in the center seat taking on another Broadway show turned movie. This time, we are heading to the decade of big hair, LP Records and Power Ballads. Yes, the 2009 musical tribute, nominated for five Tonys and currently playing on Broadway is getting the big screen tribute. Will this rose have its thorn or hit us with its best shot? Here’s my rad review of Rock of Ages.

Our generation’s stoner duo is back again. This time, they are taking on the time honored holiday of Christmas. MOVIE REVUE: Final Destination 5 Takes A Few Detours

August 12, 2011

Nicholas D'Agosto in Final Destination 5

When a film franchise consistently attempts to deliver a greater spectacle than its previous installments, there is an inherent risk as the gap between a recycled premise and its ability to surprise the audience widens. The Final Destination series has had the potential to go in either direction several times over the last decade, drawing from an endless pool of disastrous scenarios, and though the last entry pulled enough box office revenue to justify unearthing its diminished formula for another spin, even genre fans were pleading for the wrap-up that its title so deliberately suggested.

MOVIE REVUE: Horrible Bosses, Better than Going to Work

July 9, 2011

If Seth Gordon were a less competent director, I might be tempted to make a few cheap and obvious critical references to the title of his newest film Horrible Bosses, though I would not be proud of myself for it. Fortunately, his effort here is not quite ripe enough for clever(or not so clever) puns, and is really just another satisfactory entry in the continuing resurrection of the adult comedy genre.

MOVIE REVUE: A Return to Form for the Farrelly Brothers

February 25, 2011

Hall Pass, directed and co-written by Bobby and Peter Farrelly, is a welcome showing of why these two endeared themselves to Americans in 1998 with their hit There’s Something About Mary.  As the progenitors of the modern “gross-out” comedy genre, the Farrelly Brothers have repeatedly shown themselves willing to do anything to get a laugh out of their audiences; however, this approach can be very hit-or-miss, and their movies in between There’s Something About Mary and Hall Pass have largely been misses.  With Hall Pass, however, they once again flex their gross-out muscles and give their viewers proof that their striking, patently offensive and hilarious sense of humor hasn’t gone away at all.

MOVIE REVUE: Anthony Hopkins Delivers The Rite

January 28, 2011

As a 13-year Catholic school attendee, I was (and still am) fascinated by the notion of the Devil and the constant struggle for balance between good and evil.  We were taught many things about the nature and origins of the Devil, the most notable bit being that he was once an archangel named Lucifer.  After losing a war with God for the throne, Lucifer was cast with his armies into perdition, all of whom now “wander the world, seeking the destruction of souls”, to quote the Prayer of St. Michael.  And one of the ways the Devil seeks to destroy souls is through possession, whereby demons take over and corrupt the human soul in order to kill the body from the inside.  There have been documented cases of actual demonic possession, including one of a 14-year-old Maryland boy which inspired the 1973 classic The Exorcist.

MOVIE REVUE: Do You Believe in the Devil?

January 28, 2011

The Rite

When you look at the news and watch you can’t help but feel that for as much good as there is, there is an equal amount of evil around us on any given day. The universe has balance. We know this to be true in physics in that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Religion is no different. Most religions believe that in addition to god, or a god, there must be evil, and in many cases it’s the form of the devil. If you believe in good, or god, you must believe in evil, or the devil.
