MOVIE REVUE: I See Brilliance

March 18, 2011

I Saw the Devil

A true monster in a horror film is someone who is vindictive in nature, has no morale’s and will kill you for no reason at all, simply to amuse themself. Most horror films of recent times involve fantastical monsters from hell, beyond, etc. But a real monster is as previously described. They truly are a force to be reckoned with.

MOVIE REVUE: Must Come To an End

December 10, 2010

All Good Things

Whenever a movie starts off by saying it is “Inspired by a True Story”, I’m always a little wary. Just how much of what I’m going to see on screen is truth, and how much of it is made up for entertainment factor. I was lucky enough to see a screening of this film when director Andrew Jarecki was there to present the film to the audience. He talked in great length about how he as a director is fascinated by peoples’ secrets. He stated that when he first started to tackle this story he looked at everything that had been written in the past and found it to be rather useless to him, so he began a long quest of an investigation as to the heart of this story. After seeing the film, I have little doubt that the vast majority of what we as an audience see on screen is fact, and not fiction.

MOVIE REVUE: Minimal Monsters on a Micro-Budget

November 5, 2010

The film Monsters is the antithesis of almost every previously released alien invasion movie. It tells the tale of two travelers amidst a hot zone of military containment against an alien presence whose intentions are never made fully clear. Six years before, a probe containing samples of alien life forms crashes over Central America. The life forms evolve into large creatures resembling octopi, capable of bioluminescence and eventually multiply, spreading quickly to northern Mexico. That northern region with the heaviest presence of these creatures quickly becomes quarantined (dubbed the ‘Infected Zone’) by US authorities, who erect a massive wall on the border.

MOVIE REVUE: A Supernatural Eclipse

April 9, 2010

Director Conor McPherson has brought the fear and supernatural realm into his latest film, The Eclipse. This movie brings the type of horror film that I personally would like to see more of in today’s movies. Eclipse brings the ghost stories we grew up to while combining a budding love story with a hint of raw human condition making it into a beautifully crafted work of art. It shows us through the lead character how we all must carry on living after we mourn the death of a loved one. This movie goes to show that it does not need gallons of blood and guts to emphasize the storyline. If there was ever a haunting Irish tale to be told on screen, then my lads and lasses, I would not dare disappoint you with this review.

TRR EXCLUSIVE: The 2009 WAFCA Award Winners

December 7, 2009

Good morning everyone:

One of the things that has changed my life this year was the moment I became the 48th member of the Washington DC Area Film Critics Association. The Washington, DC Area Film Critics Association (WAFCA) was founded in 2002 and is comprised of DC-based film critics from television, radio, print and the internet. As of right now, they have 48 members. Notable critics and my fellow friends in WAFCA include “BDK” of WJFK 106.7 FM, Nell “The Movie Mom” Minow, and Arch Campbell – Legendary Film Critic of WJLA ABC 7. I am truly blessed to be part of an elite group. I mean can you imagine sharing your love of movies with the people whose sole job is to inform you if the movie is good or not. I was honored that the members of WAFCA welcomed me with open arms to their organization.
