MOVIE REVUE: A Gritty Western

True Grit

Usually I say to myself, why is Hollywood so unoriginal by remaking movies or making sequels rather than actually coming up with a new idea. When Hollywood remakes an original that is a classic I always get worried. Will it do the original justice? Will it be any good? Will it improve upon the original? There are so many questions that enter my mind and with each one comes another and I start getting nervous. Usually it doesn’t live up to the original and the fears are realized. But every now and then a remake comes along that is simply a great movie all by itself. True Grit is one of these.

AWARDS SEASON NEWS: SAG Award Nominees 2011

Awards Season has officially started with the announcement of the 2011 Screen Actors Guild Awards. As expected, films like The King’s Speech and The Fighter are with leading the pack with four nominations a piece. After getting completely shut out by the Golden Globes, the Coen Brothers remake of the western classic True Grit got the respect it deserve by earning two nominations.

MOVIE REVUE: Tron Legacy – A True Spectacle, But Not Much Else

In 1982, Walt Disney Pictures released a film called Tron, which promised to take us to the world behind the computer screen; it did exactly that, with actors personifying various computer programs.  The story of a software developer physically pulled into the computer to gain access to his stolen programs captured the imaginations of a generation of computer users, inspiring computer animation and computer-generated imagery (CGI) to become a prevalent force in cinema.  (Oddly enough, the Academy did not consider Tron for Best Special Effects that year; the director, Steven Lisberger, was told that using computer animation was cheating!)

MOVIE REVUE: A Digital Domain

Tron Legacy

28 years have gone by since we’ve seen Jeff Bridges on the screen playing Kevin Flynn.  Why a movie studio would hold back on a sequel to a film that holds a cult following is beyond me.  With technology advancing so far, this is a movie that screams to be made and featured on big screens all over.  Sure, the original may be a bit dated, but this new film is sure to please.  So does it?  The answer is, it certainly does.

AWARDS SEASON NEWS: The 2010 SAG Award Winners

If you have not watch the 16th Screen Actors Guild Awards yesterday, you are not missing much. If you didn’t catch the Golden Globes on Sunday, January 16th, you missed a lot. Watching this year’s Screen Actors Guild awards honor the outstanding performances of film and television of the previous year. Many of the winners who won the coveted “Actor” yesterday night have won the Golden Globe last Sunday.
