Star Trek Into Darkness Launches at Smithsonian IMAX Theaters May 15 and May 31

 

Paramount’s Star Trek Into Darkness will open at the Airbus IMAX Theater at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va., May 15 and in IMAX 3-D at the Samuel C. Johnson IMAX Theater at the National Museum of Natural History May 31. Tickets to see the film at the Hazy Center are on sale at www.si.edu/imax. Tickets to see the film at the Johnson IMAX Theater go on sale Friday, May 17, on the same website.

MOVIE REVUE: Ghost Protocol – Mission Accepted

The collaboration of director J.J. Abrams and Tom Cruise in 2006′s Mission:Impossible III marked a vast improvement over John Woo’s awkwardly trendy, over-stylized sequel six years prior. Also referred to as Me:Too, Woo’s crossover effort seemed self-indulgent for Cruise and unnaturally trigger-happy for the series, a flash-in-the-pan box office juggernaut to follow the success of Brian De Palma’s sleepy 1996 noir-based original. So here we are at number four, ditching the Roman numeral for the mysterious subtitle Ghost Protocol, which sounds vaguely like something out of Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six collection. With the hope that director Brad Bird would continue the momentum given to the stalling franchise by Abrams five years earlier, I found myself succumbing to some pretty high expectations. Thankfully, just a few minutes in to Ghost Protocol‘s opening prison break sequence, I felt assured that disappointment was not imminent. Thirty minutes later, when Cruise’s Ethan Hunt is sprinting from the grounds of the Kremlin as it bursts apart in a succession of massive explosions reminiscent of War of the Worlds, I found myself already praying for an M:I5.

Trekkies both old and new can can set the phasers on stun again now that we have confirmation that J.J. Abrams would officially commit to directing the sequel to the 2009 Smash Hit Reboot of Star Trek.

MOVIE REVUE: Super 8 Leaves The Light On!

 

When I did my very first TRR summer preview show a few weeks ago, I called Super 8 – the hot pick for June 2011. I could not be more spot on then that. Under the leadership of J.J. Abrams and producer Steven Speilberg, Super 8 combines the classic storytelling of amateur filmmaking with the elements of a sci-fi monster thriller. This movie reminds me of two Spielberg’s best works which defined him as a director. From its brilliant casting and storyline to its great casting of fresh faces, J.J. Abrams has created a movie that people will be talking about all summer long.  If you love filmmaking, then you have found your movie. Super 8 is the Summer Sensation of 2011!
