COMMENTARY: What 3D Are You Watching?

When we go to the theater and pay that extra surcharge to see the latest film forced down our throat in 3D, keep in mind that there are many different 3D technologies found at theaters. We all can remember the old days of putting on the red and blue glasses and staring at the screen in amazement. Nowadays that technology seems so foreign with the enormous leaps of improvement though. Now we have technologies like RealD polarized glasses amongst more than a few others.

With the new blockbuster Tron: Legacy in 3D just a little more than a week away, many of you out there may be considering spending the extra money to see it in one of the various IMAX screens in the DC Metropolitan area. There’s really nothing better than watching a huge movie on a huge screen. The impact is impressive and the visuals can be enhanced by the sheer size of the screen and power of the audio equipment. But… Did you know that not all “giant” screens are considered equal?

On Tuesday, March 9, 2010, I have come full circle in my life as your entertainment reporter. It was nearly one year ago that I have covered my very first red carpet at the National Air & Space Museum. This time, I am back at NASM to cover the WORLD PREMIERE of IMAX’s new film – HUBBLE 3D. Narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio, this new film follows the Space Shuttle crew (STS-125) as they embark on the final mission to repair the Hubble Space Telescope. In addition, the new film will explore the Milky Way Galaxy and beyond like no other documentary before. Combining the latest in 3d technology, Hubble 3D is light years ahead of its time.

IMAX NEWS: Star Trek Returns to IMAX

Star Trek will be getting an additional two-week run in almost 100 IMAX theaters. Due to theaters committing early to Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Star Trek’s first IMAX run was only two-weeks. Star Trek was released on May 8th, 2009 and has made $256.7 million domestic, along with $126.3 million internationally for a total take of $383.1 million. The film’s budget was $150 million.
