I’m only beginning to appreciate what Wilfred has to offer a tiny bit more each week. It’s unabashedly mean spirited, and that’s just describing the chemistry of the two leads. Not that it’s necessarily a bad thing, but a very observable thing nonetheless; if you can get over that, then you can begin to find enjoyment in Wilfred.
“Fear” manages to finally pick up some steam, weaving a couple of threads from the two seemingly very random previous episodes. Here, Ryan’s missing wallet comes back into play in a very big way, as he is finally confronted by his noisy neighbor Spencer (a slimmer but still formidable Ethan Suplee). Ryan, who is extra paranoid from all the stolen weed he and Wilfred have smoked, convinces Spencer that he too was robbed and the thief must have left his wallet at the scene. This tactic proves to be of great consequence as Spencer (who now considers Ryan to be a “cool guy”) begins infringing upon Ryan’s free time, insisting that they watch hardcore porn together uncomfortably close to each other on the couch while Spencer fist bumps Ryan about being “rock hard”.
This friendship with the very unbalanced Spencer leads to bigger problems for Ryan as he tries to weave his way out of Spencer’s overbearing lifestyle, as Wilfred attempts to trip him every step of the way. The introduction of the Spencer character allowed for some breathing room between Ryan and Wilfred, and by episode’s end, the two have actually moved into something resembling genuine friendship. I’m willing to bet Spencer’s lack of boundaries will prove to be somewhat polarizing for viewers, pushing the show into near Cable Guy territory, though I think he’s the shot in the arm the show needed. Also be on the lookout for Damon Herriman (recently seen on FX’s Justified) in a brief turn as Jesse, the ex-best friend of Spencer. I honestly hope to see these two provide some more folly Ryan and Wilfred in the future, as it was good to see them bond over a common goal. Also the show has got a bit more legitimately funny, rather than just relying on stock weed jokes.
