The 2012 Flamenco Festival (via Spain) graced the stage of Lisner Auditorium at The George Washington University in Washington, DC for aweek-long (February 29-March 7) sequence of lively dance and music performances. The stars of the gala flamenca are all not only distinguished flamenco dancers from Spain — Carmen Cortés, Rafaela Carrasco, and Olga Pericet — but they are also the choreographers of this splendid cultural event (in addition to Manual Liñán who choreographed the second number of opening night called Cantiñas). The festival opened with all three stars on stage flanked with their supporting cast members of four men introducing themselves one-by-one in a spotlight. This gala flamenco was true to the art of flamenco in that it portrayed this passionate and seductive art form as an integrated mexcla (“mixture”) of batasde cola (tail coats), castañetas (“castanets”), energetic, staccato leg and arm movements, and Gypsy-infused musical rhythms.
