It was a mere two years ago that moviegoers were taken on a trip to Sweden to explore the awe and mystery of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Director Niels Arden Oplev brought Stieg Larsson’s thrilling Millennium series to life on the big screen. The question remains: Can lightning strike twice? The answer is a resounding YES! As director David Fincher, coming off his Social Network high, brings the Swedish to the American audience without sacrificing its roots. Armed with brilliant performances, a solid screenplay, killer score, and an edge of your seat look into the disappearance of a young girl – Fincher’s Tattoo leaves no stone unturned.
Beginners is overall, a well written movie. I personally LOVE movies where a main character narrates. This does not disappoint. The narration is extremely witty and makes you laugh at situations you may not have laughed at normally! I also love movies that are written and directed by the same person. But this time, it did not prove to be overly helpful.
Every now and again, a film comes out that has not a hint of ugliness or violence, choosing instead to deal with its subject of death and life on its own terms. Harold and Maude is one of those that readily comes to mind; now, we have Beginners, a film brimming with bittersweet wistfulness and extraordinary performances from actors Christopher Plummer, Ewan McGregor and Melanie Laurent.
