MOVIE REVUE: They’ve Got the Magic Flick

June 29, 2012

Girrrllll…

I seriously considered that being my entire review, because that accurately sums up my reaction to this beautiful example of cinematic genius. There may be a legal battle brewing between Channing Tatum and his former stripper buddies over the idea, but I do not care whose idea it was. All that matters is that this idea was executed. A strip club experience without the cover charge, expensive drinks, or some stranger’s genitals being anywhere near your face? Yes, please!

MOVIE REVUE: Jump, Back on Jump Street

March 16, 2012

One of endearing classics from Fox Television’s earliest days was 21 Jump Street. For five seasons, we saw an elite group of fresh face police officers go undercover to investigate a variety of crimes through in high schools and colleges. A quarter of a century later, Street hits the big screen with Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum at the helm. While this new film maybe considered a remake, Street takes on a life of its own while paying some respect to the original. Are you jump, back down on Jump Street?

MOVIE REVUE: The Vow is Guaranteed to Move You

February 10, 2012

People have not had enough of silly love songs or silly love films – cinemas trot out the trite tales every February to the delight of lovebirds and all the single ladies determined to have a happy Valentine’s Day with their girlfriends. Judging from the trailer, The Vow is the latest installment in the growing lineup of cheesy romantic comedies. With stars from The Notebook and Dear John and a premise similar to 50 First Dates, this film seems like it should have been imagined by Nicholas Sparks rather than inspired by a couple who actually survived the central trauma. Surprisingly and fortunately, Vow is not quite predictable or superficial enough to join the ranks of Katherine Heigl’s hits. Instead, The Vow delicately handles a tragic situation and teaches the audience that in order to love whom you are meant to love, you have to be who you are meant to be.

MOVIE REVUE: Soderbergh Controls Chaos in Haywire

January 22, 2012

It’s nice to see an action film that doesn’t complicate things just for the sake of looking smart. As much as I enjoyed most of the spy films from 2011, we saw almost every variation and mind-boggling complexity that the genre had to offer. In Haywire, which was initially slated for release early last year, we are treated to 90 minutes of undiluted action that stays within the boundaries of physics (and our attention spans) and out of the confusing details.

MOVIE REVUE: A Lackluster Symbol

February 11, 2011

The Eagle

Sometimes trailers show you a story that you build up in your head and expect a lot of, only to be let down. I’m a big History Channel buff so when I see a story that intrigues me I get all excited and look forward to seeing it. The story itself may be really good, but ultimately a movie based around it may not be as good as the opportunity to tell a story. Unfortunately that’s the case that happened here. The story is sound and good, but the plot of the movie is just a little too weak for my taste.
