THEATRE NEWS: American Voices New Play Institute to Host Convening Next Week

The American Voices New Play Institute will hold the first of its three convenings in the 2011/12 season November 4-5, 2011 at Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater. This convening, IN THE INTERSECTION: Non-Profit and Commercial Producers in the New Play Sector, will bring together about 30 theater practitioners and producers who have worked in both the non-profit and commercial theater industry. The event will be closed to the public and the media. A report summarizing the panels and roundtable discussions will be written by Diane Ragsdale and shared a week after the convening on the Institute’s online journal, HowlRound.com, followed by an official white paper this winter.

Disney On Ice

Every parent treasures the look.  Eyes open wide, hands clasped under the chin.  Squeals of laughter.  Then, a turn of the head to mom or dad, in wonderment and gratitude.  “Didja see that?! That was awesome!” It’s the delight of children enjoying a moment you’ve provided for them, and there are plenty of those in “Disney On Ice: Dare to Dream” at George Mason’s Patriot Center.

Monty Python’s Spamalot sang its way into the funny bone of everyone at The Lyric Opera House in Baltimore on Columbus Day weekend. Described as “lovingly ripped off from” the 1975 film, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the musical is a show worth seeing.

Cirque du Soleil: The World of Quidam Comes to Baltimore

Since its inception in 1984, Cirque du Soleil has symbolized a level of performance that exceeds the boundaries of human capability. Through almost three decades of resident and touring shows, international audiences have grown to expect an exhibition of finely tuned acrobatic talent from all over the world, blending its trademark flavor of circus and street performance with imaginative characters and storytelling. A Cirque classic, Quidam has come to Baltimore for the first time and is performing at the 1st Mariner Arena August 24th-28th. The show first premiered in the company’s home town of Montreal in 1996 and after fifteen years has been incorporated into their recently formed arena division.

Quidam Sparks the Imagination in Charm City

Cirque Du Soleil never ceases to amaze its millions of fans when it comes to the physical feats they display in their numerous productions. The famous Montreal-based troupe is at it again once more with the production of Quidam! Celebrating its fifteenth anniversary this year, Quidam makes a stop at the 1st Mariner Arena for a one week engagement through August 28th. With a cast of 52 top notch world class acrobats, singers, musicians, and performers, Quidam delivers a magnificent feast of visually breathtaking acts for the young at heart, comedic sketches that bring the old vaudeville spirit to life, and symbolic themes that make the mind wonder at their true meaning. As a true Cirque Du Soleil follower (number four on my list), I can say with certainty that Quidam continues the grand tradition of taking your breath away. Read the rest of this entry »

For this lifelong game show fanatic, being part of it brought my experience to a whole new level.
