On Monday, May 13, the Newseum will rededicate its Journalists Memorial, which honors newspeople who died or were killed in the pursuit of news. The names of 84 journalists who died covering the news in 2012 will be added to the memorial at the 10 a.m. ceremony, along with six journalists killed in previous years who were recently brought to the Newseum’s attention. The 2012 death toll of 84 is the fourth highest number of journalists killed in a single year.

Smithsonian Theaters will launch the giant-screen film, The$Dream$Is$Alive, March 29 at the Airbus IMAX Theater in the National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va. A highly regarded IMAX classic originally released in June 1985, The Dream Is Alive is narrated by Walter Cronkite and focuses on NASA’s Shuttle Program. Included in the film is coverage of shuttle mission STS-41-D, the first launch of Discovery, including footage of liftoff and the deployment of two of the three satellites on the mission. Footage is also shown of Discovery’s landing and cross-country transport from its landing site at Edwards Air Force Base in California to Kennedy Space Center in Florida on the back of the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft.

“Creating Camelot” Photography Exhibit, Featuring More Than 70 Images of
JFK and Family, Opens April 12
On April 12, the Newseum will open a new exhibit, “Creating Camelot: The Kennedy Photography of Jacques Lowe,” as part of its year-long exploration of the life, legacy and death of America’s 35th president. The exhibit features intimate, behind-the-scenes images of John F. Kennedy, his wife, Jacqueline, and their children, Caroline and John, taken by Kennedy’s personal photographer.

The Newseum, in partnership with the Hirshhorn Museum, will present a projection featuring images and quotes by Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei. Ai is an outspoken critic of the Chinese government’s stance on democracy whose advocacy of universal human rights complements the Newseum’s mission to champion freedom of speech and expression for all people.

This morning, the Newseum will receive electronic versions of more than 800 front pages from newspapers across the country and around the world announcing the results of the 2012 presidential election. Each of these pages can be found on http://www.newseum.org, and 60 of the most compelling front pages, including one from each state and the District of Columbia, will be printed for display at the Newseum’s Pennsylvania Avenue entrance. Another 80 will be displayed inside the Newseum in the Today’s Front Pages Gallery.
