“No one likes a dirty girl.”
Danielle’s principal delivers those harsh words after the she is kicked out of class for asking about the pull-out method in the middle of an abstinence lecture. Judging by the notes other boys from her high school pass her, the principal doesn’t have a clue. Some people obviously like her just fine. Writer and director Abe Sylvia’s Dirty Girl (now available on DVD from The Weinstein Company) successfully drives home the point that this principal is missing: dirty girls (or closeted boys, mean girls, fat kids, etc.) often do not like themselves and once they deal with the self-loathing and anger trapped inside, they become who they really want to be. Then, what other people prefer ceases to matter.

Everyone has heard about Doctor Who, but no one is really sure what it is. The average American would think that it is a cult TV show watched only by sweaty nerds and geeks. The average Brit would think of it as only a children’s show with no intellectual merit. Honestly, Doctor Who means something different to every one of its fans because of its tendency to change and evolve as time goes by. And there is no greater example of Doctor Who’s evolving structure than Season 6. Or what we’ve seen of Season 6, anyways.

For this edition of TRR DVD Revue, we are setting the wayback machine to the mid 80′s when Cartoon ruled the airwaves. While Hasbro brought us Transformers on the small screen, another line of robots created the “robots in disguise” craze first. They were the Tonka line produced GoBots. Thanks to the cartoon giant Hanna-Barbera, they created a series that tells the tale between the heroic Guardians and the evil Renegades. Let us talk about the Challenge of the GoBots miniseries that made its way to DVD this week.

The ‘90s were a cultural goldmine when it came to sitcoms, and Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was part of it. One of the joys of sitcoms from the ‘90s is the escapism it provides; you can jump into any episode and instantly be transported into another world where all the mistakes that characters make only lead to hijinks and hilarity, and nothing truly bad happens. You don’t expect much of Fresh Prince beyond its ability to entertain and fondly remember the ‘90s.

Whose Line Is It Anyway (WLIIA) with Drew Carey was by far one of the most entertaining shows in a sea of terrible TV. As a fan of both the original show from the UK and the US, I was eagerly awaiting the debut of Colin & Brad: Two Man Group starring Colin Mocherie and Brad Sherwood. Or as I like to think of it, the second-funniest man from US WLIIA and the un-funniest man in all of comedy, respectively. Let’s get right into it.

I believe I once mentioned that I’m a sucker for interesting narratives. So while The Norman Conquests is by far nothing new, it is interesting.

Surfing isn’t necessarily my thing. I haven’t lived near a beach since 1989, and Maine was not necessarily the big surfing scene. However, science is my thing. If done right, watching other people having fun is also entertaining. One last thing; watching other cultures can – if done right – can also be entertaining to watch. These four unlikely things combine in The Ultimate Wave Tahiti 3D.

Dinosaurs have always been a subject of fascination. There is so much known – much of it deduced; meanwhile there is much more unknown – much of that is guessed/theorized. Donald Sutherland guides us through a journey taking place now about the past in Dinosaurs: Giants of Patagonia 3D on Blu Ray.

There’s something to be said for British crime dramas. American television knows that crime dramas are good draws – after all, 7 of the top 25 Primetime Broadcast Network shows are crime dramas (all ages). British shows record longer, and have a tendency to focus more on character development. There were also the murder mystery shows like Peter Falk’s Columbo, and others, that were almost two hours in length, and felt like mini-movies. Midsomer Murders is more like the last of these types of crime dramas. Set 17 contains four of the seven episodes.
