Look I know I’m a shitty wife and I’m not winning any mother of the year awards. – Lori
Truer words have never been spoken on this show. Lori has finally evolved, shall we say as a character, becoming less hate-able by the moment. “Sick” did not quite live up to the previous episode, but nonetheless it was still a very good episode. Lori, Glenn and the rest of the women folk (along with Carl) remained in the cell block and got to care for Herschel , who remained at death’s door following his amputation. I liked that Maggie had made her peace and told her father to just let go; it was a moving moment in a show that generally doesn’t do well with that kind of stuff. The best thing about Herschel’s scenes was the CPR moment that led to an admittedly cheap jump scare, but damn if it didn’t startle me. Good work, AMC.
The other stuff had to do with the men leading the remaining prisoners through the prison to get them to their new home—in exchange for exactly half the remaining food supply. The leader of this motley crew was Tomas, a slightly racist inmate with a hair-trigger temper. This personality did not mix well with Rick, leading to Rick taking some rather harrowing actions, namely a machete to Tomas’ skull, but perhaps more disturbingly was letting inmate Andrew become a zombie snack. Allllllthough, Andrew’s fate did occur off-screen, so there’s a chance that he could not actually be dead, as television has been prone to do since dramatic serials have existed.
Like last week, “Sick” delivered zombie slaughter in spades once again. I didn’t think the prison setting would allow this bloodletting justice, but it has been very effective as the group maneuvers through darkened corridors, the show has managed to pick up some real steam through effective suspense. That said, with only two surviving inmates, it will be interesting to see what direction is taken now that all that remains with them are zombies. Cue the next outside conflict: the voyeurs observing Carol’s c-section practice.
