Monster Jam is crushing it’s way through Baltimore this weekend, at 1st Mariner Arena.
This show is always a rip-roaring good time. With the 30th anniversary of champion Grave Digger, the crowd was envigorated. If you have never been to a monster truck rally, I highly recommend it. If you love loud noises and dirt flinging, this is the place for you! I have been going every year, for over a decade and it’s still a highlight of my winter doldrums. I love the roar of the engines as they pile-drive over and crush the cars in their path of destruction. My favorite time of the night is when those mammoth tires spray dirt all over the arena, while the drivers do donuts.
I guess a complaint would be the size of the arena for this type of event. It always seems like the trucks don’t have enough room to do all of their tricks. I’m not sure what a better venue in the Baltimore area would be, so I can’t offer a better suggestion. It seems that this is a major consenus of people all over the country. We all love the show, but at the same time, wish there was more space and more ruckus going on.
This year’s show was a slower version of the past years. There was a lot of down time and not much filler. Usually, they have the motorcross perform and ATV’s doing tricks, but this year there were just some videos on the outdated megatron. There was also a bizarre robot battle. At first, I thought it was cool…two transformer-like vehicles rolled out and then became robots, one for Earth and from an alien planet. Naturally, Earth won, but it was over very quickly and the “transformers” reminded me of something out of the 1980′s. The little kids seemed to be excited by the pyrotechnics, though.
Overall, it was a fun night. I still had a great time, despite some of the slower parts. They are coming back in June with a “destruction” show, which sounds to be a lot of fun. There are more shows to catch this weekend. Today at 2pm, tonight at 7:30pm and Sunday, Sunday, Sunday at 2pm. Take the family and don’t forget your earplugs!
